“We
began this new Craft Program with the intention of exposing
the people
we support to the basics of tole painting and country
crafting.”

With
the move to community living, friends, families and the people
who provide support to people who have an intellectual
disability realized that they needed meaningful activities to
occupy their time. Without
that simple
distinction, a community is no different than an institution.
In addition to the many requirements of providing support to
people, this is the actual challenge to frontline staff. Add
to this the need to do this with limited funds and you get a
sense of how important this project is.
Wyecroft. We have just completed our first of many craft
projects. Finding
new and creative activities is not easy.
Along
with this, the individuals we support had the opportunity to
work and socialize in a small group with individual
instruction. The
benefits of this program are immeasurable.
The individuals have improved fine and gross motor
skills, grown socially and intellectually.
They have learned cooperation, patience, focus and
artistic skills.
